We discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being. - Dr. Maria Montessori
ABout Montessori Education
Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870 and it was soon apparent that she was ahead of her time. She was the first female Italian physician and she developed the Montessori philosophy.
Dr. Maria Montessori established her first Children's House, Casa dei Bambini in 1907. Her life's work and dedication to the education of children is recognized worldwide, as shown through three Nobel Peace Prize nominations. Dr. Montessori died in 1952, but to this day, her work and philosophy live on.
Today, Montessori schools are found all over the world. Dr. Montessori based her educational methods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. She believed in a prepared environment in which children could freely choose from many developmentally appropriate activities.
Montessori philosophy is based on the belief in children's creative potential, their drive to learn, and internal discipline. Teachers are facilitators in the prepared environment, so learning is encouraged, not forced. As compared to a traditional education, the Montessori method utilizes individuality and the child's inherent readiness for progression, allowing for self-paced learning. Abstract concepts are presented through concrete activities and aid in the mastery of didactic subjects.
Our program is designed to help children develop socially, physically, and emotionally. Thus, learning to be kind and courteous is as important as learning to read, write or count. Montessori is not just an education—it's an aid to life.
